A new urban forest will be planted in and around Glasgow as the city prepares to host the crucial COP26 environmental conference in November.

Over the next decade, it is planned that 18 million trees will be planted as part of the new Clyde Climate Forest which will stretch across the region’s eight local authorities.

The Clyde Climate Forest project team is reaching out to community groups and land managers to identify the best places to plant new trees, or to replace those trees that have been lost or damaged in the past. In addition local authorities will be given free assistance to identify plots of land that could be greened with trees.

Councillor Aitken, Chair of Glasgow City Region Cabinet and Leader of Glasgow City Council, commented:

“This year we have an opportunity to shine a spotlight on Glasgow City Region and showcase how we are planning to adapt to and mitigate climate change while allowing nature to thrive and grow.

“New community woodlands, trees and forests will bring multiple benefits to our local communities as well as wildlife. The pandemic has brought into focus like never before the value of local spaces as places to exercise, de-stress and engage with nature and this project can help to deliver the Green Recovery. The economic, ecological and social benefits will be extensive.”

The COP26 climate change conference is being held at Glasgow’s SEC, which is close by to the Fleet Alliance headquarters from 01-12 November.

Fleet Alliance is doing its part to help climate change by committing to switch its managed fleet of over 30,000 vehicles to zero emissions by 2030.
